What are load response programs? In and around the New York marketplace a projected electric energy and capacity deficit will exist for the upcoming summer and is anticipated to exist for at least the next five years. Because of this shortfall in electrical generation, the New York Independent System Operator and surrounding wholesale power system operators are actively fostering an entirely new marketplace, supporting a new type of offering, termed load response programs. These programs identify, develop and compensate end use customers for electrical load reduction during periods of excessive electrical demand. Load response programs allow customers the ability to make money through short term reduction of electrical consumption. These reductions are for short periods, and on a voluntary basis, to assist the wholesale power industry when a potential electric reserve shortage is present. The rationale for offering this type of opportunity is simple. Avoided electrical load available through Load Curtailment, Energy Conservation, and Distributed Generation requires a comparatively small capital investment, is available today, and is far more flexible than traditional generation.
What is my participation worth? The incentives available through load reduction programs vary from state to state and season to season. However, the revenue available from these programs can yield savings that approach 20% of your total electric costs in some areas. Give us a call to discuss the specifics of your capabilities and we'll gladly provide you with an estimate of savings.
We'll need to ask you a few questions regarding your facility and how it operates. Many of the questions can be found on the Building Questionnaire. Give some thought to what electrical equipment you can turn off if requested, how long you can live with these items being off, and how large (electrically) is the equipment in question. Armed with this information we can quickly offer an assessment of your potential income.
